Whistler Live! - Whistler Arts Council Programs

Whistler Live! ArtWalk

Whistler Live! ArtWalk - based on the objectives of the Whistler Arts Council's summer program - showcased works by local artists and artisans for Games-time visitors to discover and purchase during the 2010 Winter Games. Whistler Live! ArtWalk brought the works of local artists to Whistler Village, the Upper Village and Creekside.

Over 60 artists were juried into the community exhibition with pieces that were seen throughout 43 host galleries. The variety in medium and genre was as diverse as the people Whistler hosted. The interpretation of our local landscapes and animals adorned the walls of shops and cafes. Edgy ceramics were displayed in hotel lobbies and office spaces. Abstract and contemporary pieces added colour and intrigue to restaurants and spas.

Whistler Live! GOBOs

Visual art created a vibrant light show during The Fire & Ice Remix. Local painters’ pieces were etched into glass to become GOBOs (Goes Before Optics), which were placed over the massive stage lights. The artists’ images were projected onto the snow-covered mountain base each night to add an artistic visual element during the DJ sets and athletic snow show of huge air.

Whistler Live! Artists at Work on the Stroll

The Whistler Arts Council worked with Whistler Live! to develop programming for the Village Stroll, including street entertainment and live painting throughout the 2010 Winter Games. Artists at Work on the Stroll brought artists from across B.C. to the Village to paint live for passersby. In Town Gazebo, these artists created huge masterpieces in acrylic and spray paint as local musicians played alongside. The artists also exhibited prints of their original artwork to truly animate their tent on the stroll.

Whistler Live! Storytelling at Blackcomb Bridge

Tucked beside the Blackcomb Bridge across from Rebagliati Park people gathered every night from February 13 to 27 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Fiction and non- fiction writers, First Nations storytellers and long-time locals provided tales of the Corridor, urban myths of Whistler and traditional Aboriginal legends by the warm glow of a winter fire. Local musicians played acoustic sets for the last half hour each night. This was the perfect way to end a day of Whistler Live! performances and to kick off a night of fun at the Victory Ceremonies and Fire & Ice Remix. Storytellers included Cindy Filipenko, Isobel Maclaurin, Marcel Richoz, Nigel Woods, Phil Chew, Feet Banks, Joan Richoz, Marie Abraham, Rebecca Campbell, Tanina Williams, GD Maxwell, Libby McKeever, Michel Beaudry, Rebecca Wood Barrett, Stephen Vogler and Vania Stager.
