Adult Beginner Percussion & Hand Drumming

Adult Beginner Percussion & Hand Drumming

Have a passion for rhythm?  Try your hand at Latin and African beats on percussion instruments and hand drums.  This course is ideal for beginners who want to learn basic rhythms, syncopation, and how to keep the beat.  The class introduces the four families of percussion instruments: shakage, hand drums, melodic instruments and ostinato keepers.  After getting comfortable playing patterns on these instruments the class will put them all together into Latin and African grooves.  Students will also learn how to tastefully join in on a jam – because there’s more to life than the egg shaker!  Bring hand drums and percussion instruments if you have them.  Suitable for ages 16+ years.

Lauri Lyster is a versatile musician, equally at home playing classical, jazz, ethnic percussion and the drum set. She is a percussionist with the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, and has been a member of the lauded Celtic ensemble Winter Harp for 12 years.  She has worked with jazz bands, chamber ensembles, dance groups and recorded for television and film. Lauri recently wrote and performed in her own show, ‘The Drummer Girl’, about being a woman making a living playing drums and percussion. One of Lauri’s real joys is teaching workshops to adults and children alike, sharing her love of all things rhythmic!
